#MELANOMA

BE AWARE: Be aware of physical changes! July 07 I noticed a mole under my right arm while shaving. There was nothing ominous about it except that it literally appeared overnight. I called my dermatologist and was told I had to wait six weeks for an appointment. My response was "if this is an aggressive type of melanoma I won't be here in six weeks" ! I was given an appointment within several days! The suspicious mole was removed and sent to pathology. The dermatologist who is a friend of mine called me when the path report came in. It was second or third stage melanoma! I  don't remember! I was very scared but calm! A blood test was given at a local lab that was negative. The following week a 12 hr day at St Joseph's that included every scan you can imagine and then surgery! My lymph nodes were examined! All was clear! Then the following week a trip to The Winthrop Cancer Center at Emory! The specialists wanted me to take an experimental drug at their expense! I declined! I thought I was clear but they informed me that I had a 50/50 chance of the cancer returning. I am now very vigilant at self examining, not only for unusual moles but for headaches, lumps, etc. No more days at the beach and as a former Long Island, NY beach lifeguard I do miss spending time at the beach when I am in NY. When I do go out in the sun it is after 2 pm with an SPF of 30!
