HYDRATION AND SENIORS

My mom always told me since I can remember "have a glass of water when you get up in the morning," I didn't! That has changed, now I drink quite a bit of water because my MD has told me several times that my blood work results had shown  dehydration. Not a good thing! As we age water content decreases and this can cause a myriad of problems! Dehydration is a frequent cause of seniors being sent to the hospital. Drink water and other acceptable fluids during the course of the day. Speak to your MD to find out what amount of fluids you should be drinking? Probably based on age, activity and body weight.

OBESITY STILL REIGNS

According to a major network news show this morning obesity has not declined in this country! The reasons are obvious; lack of exercise and improper eating habits. Yesterday morning on a local news show they profiled a 45-55 year old male who suffered a major heart attack, luckily for him and his family he survived! The segment was entitled " Stress, Weight and Heart Risk" ! He was obese, ate poorly and was in a stressful job. A major lifestyle change is in order! Exercise is a wonderful thing; it burns calories, reduces weight and helps relieves stress! No pill can do so much!

JUMPING ROPE

I missed jumping rope so I located my rope in my car, walked into the aerobic room at my gym after my weight training session and gave myself a goal of 100 jumps non stop. I reached my goal but not without tripping up three times! I rested, another 100, tripped up only two times, rested, then on my third set I finally did 100 non stop! I did not want to push my luck because of my knees so I stopped after three sets! Jumping rope is such a great exercise I plan to incorporate it into my routine at least three times per week! It burns calories, tones, improves eye-hand coordination, agility, endurance and balance which at sixty plus is extremely important! Add sets and time as your conditioning improves! This may be strenuous and difficult if you have not done it in a while, maybe a few decades, be patient and practice! Jump on the balls of your feet, stay low to the ground, Relax! Don't swing your arms! Have fun! Oh! One more thing-you may want to check with your physician before you start.

5/20/15- Began jumping rope when I made this post! I had to stop due to lingering knee pain! Years of running finally took it's toll! The diagnosis was a torn meniscus. Surgery is recommended but attempting to heal though physical therapy!

GRIEF /STRESS/CHOLESTROL

I received my blood work from the  physical that I had Oct 17th and I was not happy! Although my overall results were decent including my PSA, my total cholesterol increased 35 points from one year ago and my LDL, the bad cholesterol increased 23 points, my HDL the good cholesterol did increase. My eating and exercise habits virtually remained unchanged over the past year, so what happened? I know that stress can cause a rise in cholesterol because of an increase in cortisone and adrenaline. My stress levels have remained about the same except for one thing---Grief!  What about Grief ? Grief related stress can raise blood pressure, heart rate and  levels of cortisol. I have lost two very dear friends over the past year and within four months of each other! " For some people, the shock and stress of bereavement may even bring on a heart attack "! This quote is from Health.com, 2012. I am still grieving; hopefully being mitigated by exercise, reading, family, good friends, and time! My next physical is in April and I hope my numbers will be better!

$10,000,000,000 +

This is the amount of dollars spent on just a small number of meds when people choose the wrong lifestyle! This amount is  forever increasing! Big Pharma are making huge profits on meds that depend on bad lifestyle choices by millions of people. Drugs such as Symbicort and Spiriva are for COPD which is primarily caused by smoking, Farxiga and Invokana are for type 2 diabetes which in many cases can be prevented by not smoking, exercise and proper eating! The commercials I see on cable television for Lyrica, a med for nerve pain caused by diabetes, show people that are morbidly obese. Is their a connection? Lyrica is also used for other issues but the ad that stands out is the one for diabetic nerve pain! I am assuming the  reason for the diabetic nerve pain ads is simple math and marketing! There are 29 million people plus with diabetes and many less with the other issues. 
ED meds in many cases can be avoided by not smoking, proper diet and exercising, which helps prevent diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, all of which can cause ED! I posted months ago that if you are a man in his 30's, 40's, 50's and even 60's and if you need an ED medication I would explore all possible and potential problems with your physician. The possible side effects for all these drugs are many and hideous! All these meds are connected by one common denominator: bad lifestyle choices!

"HEALTHY TRIM" / "HEALTHE TRIM" WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCT: AN OPINION

Another weight loss product that in my opinion I  do not recommend! The company suggests you wait 2-3 hours after taking 1-2 capsules before eating, which basically eliminates breakfast! This goes against everything that I recommend and suggest, foremost, eliminating the most important meal of the day! I am not talking donuts, I am talking protein and some carbs! Having protein in the AM revs up your metabolism for the day! The product contains caffeine a known appetite suppressant and stimulant and other ingredients that may or may not be beneficial. Also recommended is having two small meals during the course of the day. This routine will cause weight loss but not for an extended period. Of course as with all weight loss products that are advertised, discounts, auto billing are pitched! It is also expensive! If you do decide to use this product please check with your physician! My recommendations as always are: a healthy breakfast, healthy lunch, mid day healthy snack and a small dinner as early in the evening as possible! An exercise program lasting thirty minutes 3-4 times a week! Good luck!

VITAMIN D 3

I have not blogged since 6/20! I apologize! Why? I really had nothing to say that would hopefully benefit one's health, well being, and maybe be entertaining This is not Facebook, no one really cares if I had my once a month steak last night with a tossed salad, lots of tomatoes, and a glass of red wine.
Vitamin D3 is valuable in improving one's health! Along with D2 it is a component of vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D3 deficiency may be associated with depression, back pain, bone health, loss of immunity and cancer. Vitamin D is in my multi vitamin-mineral but only 700 units. I am now ingesting 5000 units a day of vitamin D3. I rarely go out into the sun except for my every day needs and when I do go to the beach/pool, etc., I do what I never did when I was lifeguarding: 30 sunblock, hat, shirt and umbrella! Hence my sun exposure even at the beach is limited.

ALCOHOL ADDICTION: THIQ / ENDORPHINS

Still very distraught over my dear friend's death from alcoholism in Feb, 2014 and hearing sad stories from friends and acquaintances about similar instances, I needed answers. I believe people do not process drugs and alcohol the same way. Why do some people throw away their lives to satisfy their hunger for alcohol and drugs? While other people having a glass or two of wine is not a problem. I knew my friend suffered from an addiction that AA meetings could not help because she did not want to be helped. Her addiction was that powerful.  The answers may lie in a  substance in the brain labeled THIQ, short for tetrahydroisquinolone, a metabolism byproduct of acetaldehyde. A genetic predisposition may exist for this substance. According to what I have read it is a highly addictive substance that accumulates in the brain of an alcoholic. The more we use alcohol and/or drugs the more THIQ we develop and the more we need. As it accumulates the disease of addiction progresses.
 Alcohol also releases Endorphins, small proteins with opiate like effects that produce feelings of pleasure and reward.

I would recommend to Google THIQ and "Endorphins and Alcohol Addiction" to better understand the possible addiction process caused by these substances. There are conflicting reports in THIQ's dynamics in the role of alcoholism. It has been in and out of favor over the past twenty years. I believe it is back in favor as a possible cause for addictions!

IODINE INTAKE AT 60 PLUS!

Iodine is a chemical element which the body does not produce. The body needs iodine to make thyroid hormones which controls metabolism. It is found in tuna, shrimp, grains, dairy products and obviously iodized salt. Most people in the US get enough iodine. Iodine is contained in my vitamin-mineral supplement. The recommended dosage is 150 mcg/per day. Seventeen percent of women and nine percent of men over sixty do not produce enough of thyroid hormone. Some symptoms of  low production are: fatigue, forgetfulness, depression, mood swings, joint pain and slowed thinking. There has also been a correlation between breast cancer and breast cysts with low iodine intake. Please do not run to the nearest vitamin store and purchase iodine supplements. Please talk with your physician! A blood test may be recommended.

INSPIRATION

The Gym, aka, the Health Club, Fitness Center, Rec Center, for me is more then an assortment of weights, machines, etc., it is an assortment of personalities. Most of the members of my gym, male and female, are very nice, helpful and pleasant. Even the members that are working out intensely will answer your question about a particular exercise. A simple "good morning" a few months ago becomes "how was your weekend" and a friendship ensues.
Beyond the perspiration there is the inspiration! The man in his late eighties who takes 25 minutes to walk with the help of his cane  from the locker room to the entrance where his wife is waiting in the car. The elderly couple who always walks hand in hand to the men's locker room entrance where she recruits a male member to walk her husband to the pool - because he is blind. The group of mentally challenged members enjoying a cardio and resistant machine workout. The man whom I already mentioned in a previous post who is trying very diligently to recover from a broken neck. He has made great strides! The woman in her eighties who will not hesitate to ask me or another member to remove 45 lb plates from a machine where another member momentarily forgot proper gym etiquette. The group of 60's plus who prefer group workouts in the  pool to the gym.

Do not be duped by this advertising/marketing ploy from a weight loss company. The loss of the  first five pounds of any weight loss/exercise plan are the easiest. It is the next five, ten, fifteen pounds and more that are more challenging and difficult. If you do not exercise and eat poorly, just by walking every day for 20-30 minutes and slightly changing your eating habits for the better, you will lose five pounds quite rapidly. Then a lifestyle change needs to be implemented to continue your success.

DEPRESSED /SAD: EXERCISE !

Unfortunately sadness and depression are a part of life. We cannot escape them! After losing two very dear friends, one in October and another in February, both emotions have been knocking at my door! I fight each one with EXERCISE! Exercise produces endorphins which are produced in the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus during exercise- whether at the gym or while taking a nice walk. Endorphins have the ability to promote a feeling of wellness, a boost in mood and lower rates of depression. If the sadness and depression remain a visit to the MD may be necessary because a chemical imbalance may be at play.

PAIN DISCOMFORT/ FOLOW UP

This is a follow up to a series of integrative treatments I had received for joint discomfort in my lower back, knees, wrist and elbow. Located in Sandy Springs, Georgia, the center is called Total Health Care Joint and Spine Centers. My treatments lasted from Oct- Feb, 3x per week. Many insurance plans are accepted. There may be similar homeopathic centers in your area. The treatments included chiropractic, physical therapy, Supartz injections and Zeel homeopathic injections. Supartz is the trade name for sodium hyaluronate a component of synovial fluid which acts as a lubricant and shock absorber for the joints. The injections were made at the varying locations they were treating but were virtually painless because of a numbing spray that was applied before the injection. Synovial fluid decreases with age and trauma. Zeel is a combination of botanical substances to reduce pain, stiffness and inflammation in the joints. Please google both products for any adverse effects. The staff was excellent in their  knowledge and care. I also continue to take my chondroitin /glucosamine and a powdered form of collagen. My estimated decrease in discomfort is 30-40 percent.

BE AWARE: KNOW YOUR BODY

Again I want to post about being aware of any unusual changes in your body! A friend of mine at the gym, a very nice guy, funny, complained to me a couple of weeks ago about unusual disorientation he would experience at the gym and at other times. I asked him some very basic questions: are you taking any meds, could it be high or low blood pressure, high or low blood sugar? He didn't think so! We both agreed he should see a doctor. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor, thankfully it is operable and gets operated on April 14th and all should be fine. At 60 plus you know what your body should feel like, anything out of the ordinary should be checked by your doctor.

PEANUT BUTTER: "SMUCKERS NATURAL" WINS !

I don't care for peanut butter cookies but I do enjoy peanut butter! Go figure! Peanut Butter and HFC free jelly on organic bread with some skim or low fat milk for lunch is a quick healthy energized snack/meal. I am sure by 60 plus you will have realized if you have any allergies to peanuts or other nuts. But once again buying peanut butter is no longer a simple choice. My mission was to find in my opinion the healthiest choice of peanut butter for my viewers/followers and myself. I looked at labels and googled ingredients. I shopped many brands from the name brands to the store brand generics. Simply put: less is more! The less ingredients the more healthy it is for you. I needed to avoid peanut butter with sugar, palm oil and EDTA and a host of other preservatives. This was no easy task! SMUCKERS NATURAL WINS! A little more in price but a healthier choice and this is what my blog is all about.

SALAD DRESSINGS

I enjoy them all: Blue Cheese, French, Russian, Thousand Island, Balsamic Vinaigrette, etc. But since I want to extend my 76 yrs average male life expectancy in the USA my choice will be limited! No more sugar, sodium, calcium disodium edta, cholesterol, carbs, xanthan gum, HFC, etc. found in the aforementioned salad dressings and others. As boring as it sounds I have gone exclusive; Olive Oil and Vinegar: carbs 0, sodium 0, sugar 0, with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats also called the "good fats"! My cardiologist will definitely approve!

ANGER OUTBURSTS: RECENT STUDY

Another study which in my opinion is pure common sense. How much did they spend on this study? The study may have taken place in Europe. The results of this study: Anger Outbursts may cause a spike in blood pressure which may compromise your heart for up to two hours possibly causing a heart attack or stroke. I am the benchmark, ground zero, for anger outbursts. Simple things so foolish I am to embarrassed to mention. I need to count to three, no ten! ! So let all of us try to stay CALM!

T BOOSTERS- WARNINGS!

I have already posted that you should seek advice from your doctor before purchasing any T Boosters viewed on a infomercial. I caught a news program last night that said that low T treatments may increase risks of  heart disease. An article I read stated "T treatments may increase risks for heart attacks, strokes and death in older men with low T levels and other health problems" According to one urologist OTC natural remedies do not work. No such thing exists!

LOWER THERMOSTAT, LOSE WEIGHT, SAVE MONEY

 You should not need a degree in human physiology to realize this concept. Just common sense! Your body burns calories to maintain warmth. It finally made the news! Just lower your thermostat a few degrees, let's say from 72 to 68 and you will burn more calories and also reduce your heating bill. My thermostat is never above 67 and even cooler while sleeping. I enjoy it being cool. Only if a friend desires do I raise the thermostat.

#ARTHRI D

Another infomercial pertaining to joint discomfort! This particular one had a product called Arthri D! I called  and spoke with a customer service representative. There was no auto ship: automatic billing to your credit card, although a discount was given if you chose to do so. Either way I found this product to expensive for my wallet. A single bottle would be $ 129 including shipping. I also went to Google and some of the reviews were positive. I also found a web site called supplement-geek.com, a site worth viewing. Draw your own conclusions.

COLLAGEN

Collagen is the main structural protein of many connective tissues that is found in tendons, ligaments and skin, also to be found in cartilage and bones. It helps maintain strength and flexability throughout the body. It starts to decline with age. I started taking one scoop or 6,600mg today. Maybe taking collagen along with glucosamine/chondroitin it may ease my joint discomfort. I will keep my viewers posted.

HYDROXYCUT: OPINION

While food shopping yesterday I passed a display of the weight loss product Hydroxycut, I was curious so I read the directions and when I came home I decided to google Hydroxycut. The company suggests a reduced calorie diet and moderate exercise to be more effective. Your water intake will also be increased. This formula will be effective for almost everybody if weight loss is desired with or without Hydroxycut. Although there were success stories there are also the risk of side effects. Some are serious. Caffeine is an ingredient, obviously as a stimulant. Please speak with your doctor before consuming any weight loss product.

"RESULTS MAY VARY"

While enjoying my morning coffee on a Sat / Sun morning and scanning the TV channels I am deluged with workout infomercials; offering CD's, DVD"s, Charts, Graphs, Journals, "exclusive offers," Bonuses, Testimonials, Catch Phrases, etc. Each one with it's toned, lean spokesperson, all  "celebrity fitness" trainers. I actually saw a new "celebrity fitness" trainer this past weekend- never heard of her! All of the participants in the videos are relatively young-compared to me! No aching backs, shoulders or knees. If you follow all the guidelines they probably work. If your 60 plus and just want to get back to some semblance of good health and maybe live longer by  losing weight, lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, tone, etc., an MD on another channel suggested you walk 30 minutes per day, indulge your fast food craving 1-2 times per month, portion control, eat a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen. Hello! She may have forgotten, I am not sure, do not smoke! I would also recommend doing 3 sets, 10- 15 reps of push ups 3-4 times per week. Increasing the reps and sets as they get easier. But as the very small print says on the bottom of the TV screen with each infomercial and I am sure the MD would agree, " Results May Vary." This post is very similar to a post I made on 10/7 but I felt it was worth repeating.

T BOOSTERS

I have already posted that I have a low T level. I have also posted about two products that have a automatic delivery, automatic bill to your credit card which I highly oppose. Many of these products contain a "proprietary blend"  but many of these blends contain one or more of the same substances such as Fenugreek, Tongkat Ali, Tribulus terrestris, and others in various amounts. I have already posted that I suspect because of my low T level I don't have the energy and strength I had just several years ago. There are ways you can attempt to naturally boost your T level before you submit to taking any of the OTC or infomercial products: lose weight, high intensity exercise, increase your vitamin D and zinc intake, increase your intake of branch chain amino acids by way of whey protein, limit sugar, don't smoke, and consume the good fats. I spoke to a very nice customer service rep from one of the products I saw in a health food store to inquire about any risks by a person such as me with heart disease. I said there was no mention of any risks involved with the product. Some of the products I saw had certain risks if you had heart disease, cancer or any other medical conditions. She told me and what I have been saying to all my viewers-  speak with your physician before you take any T booster supplement. My next visit to my primary physician and cardiologist is in March/April and I will definitely inquire about these products. Google has a tremendous amount of information on T boosters including the products themselves, reviews, ingredients, etc. In the meantime I will try to boost my T level naturally.

2000 CALORIES, 30 MINUTES

I caught the last few seconds of a radio ad for a weight loss product yesterday. It stated that a max of 2000 calorie per day intake and 30 minutes of walking each day was required to insure success. HELLO! If an adult male consumes less then 2000 calories per day combined with 30 minutes of exercise  such as walking per day he will lose weight. Save your money!  You should not have to be a member of MENSA to realize this! I believe it is 1800 calories per day for women. The 2000 calories should consist of the proper amounts of good quality protein, fats and carbs.
NBC this am had a gentleman as a guest who lost weight and inches, reduced his cholesterol by eating all his meals at a fast food restaurant. I sometimes meet friends in the am to have breakfast at a fast food restaurant. My choice is always an egg white on a muffin not a biscuit. The amount of calories is 450 or less. You have the opportunity at fast food restaurants for every meal to eat healthy: salads, chicken, soup, etc. At many fast food restaurants the calorie content is displayed. It is simply a matter of making the right choices.
